A Guide to Cambodia’s 24 Most Offbeat Spots and How To Travel There

I found an Instagram post by a local Cambodian page that listed some of the least popular and forgotten offbeat spots of the country, which are completely overlooked by tourists. I wanted to dig deeper, explore and document as much information as I can so I can recommend it to more visitors.

Here is the post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DZWMH-aICNT/

Here are some additional travel details, information, pictures and documentation that may help you navigate to these places in Cambodia.

  1. Chi Phat Community-Based Ecotourism
  2. Veun Sai–Siem Pang National Park
  3. Preah Nimith Waterfall
A scenic waterfall near the Cambodian–Laos border where the Mekong widens dramatically over rocky formations. Its remote location makes it a rewarding stop for adventurous travellers.
  4. Virachey National Park
One of Cambodia’s largest and most remote protected areas, stretching across vast forests and mountains near the Laos and Vietnam borders. Multi-day treks offer a true wilderness experience, with jungle camping and encounters with indigenous communities.
  5. Phnom 1500
  6. Koh Han
  7. Phum Bak Prea of Battambang
  8. Waterfalls at Osoam
  9. Phnom Aural
  10. Sopheakmit Waterfall
  11. Chhlong district in Kratie Province
  12. Koh Samseb
  13. Khnong Phsar
  14. Hidden Waterfall on Kulen Mountain
  15. Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary
  16. Steung Areng
  17. Bou Sra Waterfall
  18. Prasat Bakan
  19. O’Sean Lair Waterfall
  20. Pailin
  21. Koh Sdach
  22. Phnom Da
  23. Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary
  24. Borey O’Svay Community

Community-Based Ecotourism Centres are in most local towns and regions and are operated by the locals whenever a tourist visits. These are informal, unorganised in nature, so don’t expect tourist comforts, but you can expect your necessities taken care of. It’s a wonderful example of local tourism where you get to live the authentic experience with the locals.

Most hidden gems are cheaper than the main tourist spots. Community homestays cost $5–10/night with meals, entry fees are minimal or free, and local guides charge $10–25/day. A hidden gems itinerary can cost less than $20/day.

Getting Off the Beaten Path

  • Rent a motorbike — $7–10/day unlocks Cambodia’s countryside
  • Learn basic Khmer — even “sue-sdei” (hello) opens doors in rural areas
  • Use local buses — cheaper and more authentic than tourist minivans
  • Stay in community homestays — $5–10/night, unforgettable experiences
  • Travel in shoulder season (May–June, Oct) — fewer tourists, green landscapes
  • Ask locals — Cambodians love sharing their favourite places with curious visitors
  • Hire local guides — they know trails, temples, and stories you’ll never find online
